Pastor Roger Po Wen Li was born on May 14, 1929, in Nanning, Guangxi Province, China. In 1945, he enrolled at the South China Adventist Academy (now Hong Kong Adventist College) in Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong. After graduating, he worked for the church's "Voice of Prophecy" correspondence school. During this time, he met his future wife, Anna Sham, at the Kowloon Seventh-day Adventist Church, and the couple married in 1953.
In 1957, he was ordained as a Seventh-day Adventist minister. In 1959, he became the senior pastor of the Kowloon Seventh-day Adventist Church. After serving the local congregation for many years, he was invited to work for the Hong Kong-Macao Conference. His responsibilities included serving as director of the Sabbath School and Youth Ministries departments, conference secretary, and financial officer for several departments.
In 1974, he went to the United States for advanced studies, earning both a master's degree and a doctorate from La Sierra University in La Jolla, California. He returned to Hong Kong and Taiwan in 1984 to resume his involvement in church ministry. From 1991 onwards, he served successively as President of the Seventh-day Adventist College in Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong; Principal of the Sam Yuk Secondary School (also located in Clear Water Bay); and President of the Seventh-day Adventist College in Yuchi Township, Taiwan.
He was also invited to the Hawaii Conference to serve as a pastor for local Chinese churches. In 1998, Pastor Li retired and returned to the United States after completing his tenure as president of the Taiwan Adventist College. In 2002, he was invited to return to active service with the Hong Kong-Macao Conference, where he served until retiring again and returning to the United States in 2010. Even in his eighties, he continued to serve as a volunteer pastor at the San Diego Chinese Church until 2020. Pastor Li concluded his formal pastoral ministry in 2023, following the passing of his wife, Dr. Anna Sham.
In his later years, Pastor Li’s physical strength gradually declined, and he suffered several falls. On June 5, 2026, following a fall at home, he was taken to the University of Southern California Medical Center, where he passed away peacefully in the arms of the Lord, surrounded by his three sons and daughters-in-law, at the age of 97.
Pastor Li dedicated his life to serving the Lord and, together with his wife, Dr. Anna Sham, proclaimed the Gospel.
